When oral medications are dispersed throughout the body they take time and much higher dosages to treat the source of pain. On the other hand, pumps can supply the source of pain, e.g. the spine, with lower, accurate dosages of medications. Not only does this reduce drug intake, but it also gives the patient the freedom to be active.
Pumps can be implanted inside the body and is filled with medication every 1-3 months. Combinations of medications can even be administered through the pump. The patient can control the pump by holding a device over the area where it is implanted. Because the pump is inside the body, there is less chance of infection.
