TENS sends a painless electrical current to specific nerves. The current is delivered through the skin. By generating heat, the current is able to relieve pain, stiffness and increase mobility. TENS seems to prompt the body to release natural painkillers.
Electrode patches are attached to the skin of the treated area. These patches contain stimulators that release mild currents. In addition to the currents, patches can also release medication to treat acute pain.
TENS is contained in a portable stimulator that is worn around the waist. The patient can control this device. A physician’s prescription is needed to acquire these devises. Patients are tested with TENS on a trial-basis before using long-term. TENS is not always a helpful treatment for everyone.
